Welcome! I’m glad you are here! I want to tell you about what you can expect if you chose to follow my blog and a little bit about my counseling private practice.

The purpose of this blog is to share with you personal stories and themes that I see coming up for clients that I think will be helpful for others to see, tips, tricks, and other awesome stuff to help the overwhelmed and probably anxious mom that is trying her best to be everything to everyone while remembering that we are not perfect, we will make mistakes and sometimes we just need to hear that we are doing a “good enough” job.

I am a licensed independent clinical social worker in Woodbury, MN. I specialize in working with anxious, overwhelmed moms trying to balance it all. I work with both expectant and new moms/dads to help them learn how to adjust to their new roles as parents. Many of my clients are struggling with infertility or loss, looking to prepare themselves and/or their relationship to the adjustment of baby, dealing with pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety, learning how to manage and balance work life and home life while still finding time to take care of themselves, trying to rediscover who they are now because they feel like they lost themselves along the way, and seeking new ways to cope with the overall overwhelm and stress that comes with being a parent in today’s world.

One of the first things that people often say about the name I chose for my practice is “oh, I love the word Serendipity!” Well, me too. Let me tell you why.

serendipity

  ser·en·dip·i·ty  \ ˌser-ən-ˈdi-pə-tē \

the fact of something interesting or pleasant happening by chance
Meeting her like that, and there of all places was true serendipity!

1. an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.
2.good fortune; luck:
The serendipity of getting the first job she applied for.

Where Does 'Serendipity' Come From? In the mid-1700s, English author Horace Walpole stumbled upon an interesting tidbit of information while researching a coat of arms. In a letter to his friend Horace Mann he wrote: "This discovery indeed is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word, which as I have nothing better to tell you, I shall endeavor to explain to you: you will understand it better by the derivation than by the definition. I once read a silly fairy tale, called 'The Three Princes of Serendip': as their highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of…." Walpole's memory of the tale (which, as it turns out, was not quite accurate) gave serendipity the meaning it retains to this day.

So, now you are asking yourself what in the heck does serendipity have to do with counseling?

When I imagined myself as a therapist in private practice, I wanted a place where individuals felt comfortable and welcomed. I didn’t want the cold, clinical feel that we sometimes picture from the movies. I wanted a place where someone can be themselves and not feel judged or “crazy” and know that they are not alone in their struggles.

I don’t pretend to know all of the answers.

In fact, I am still figuring much of this “stuff” out myself. However, I would love to share with you stories that I think you will find relatable, some tips and tricks that I hope will make your lives a little easier, and whatever else seems like it might be helpful.

So, whether you decide to follow my blog posts, or take a chance and come to Serendipity Counseling Services for counseling, my hope is that you will find something valuable and possibly even make an unexpected discovery about yourself that leaves you feeling validated and a little serendipitous.
